STAINS

Some of you know how it goes with babies and children and some of you are about to find out. Listed are a few helpful hints on how to get out some of those tough stains babies and children leave behind to forever remind you what they had that day. These tips will work in most cases, we cannot guarantee perfection. Please test a small area of the fabric unless you feel it doesn't matter what happens because it is ruined anyway. Good Luck.

The following are definitions of the items you will need to help you get the stains out.

Absorbent-Any dry powder that will soak up excess liquid associated with the stain. Absorbents allow removal of the staining liquid without rubbing or other action that might spread the stain. cornstarch or talcum powder can be used to absorb many staining liquids. Use only enough absorbent to soak up the liquid.

Combination Solvent-A commercial product that is sprayed or rubbed into the affected area. These are generally classified as laundry boosters and contain solvents for both oil- and water-based stains. Fels-Naptha is a good one.

Detergent-Any liquid detergent, such as the type used to wash dishes will do. The undiluted detergent should be worked into the stain and allowed to rest for a few minutes before rinsing.

Digestant-An enzyme available in pure form such as pepsin and amylase or as a component of some laundry products. If the enzyme-containing product is dry, mix with water to form a paste 1 tablespoon powder to 1 tablespoon water and apply to the stain. If in liquid or paste form, apply directly. Keep the treated area moist and allow at least a half hour before laundering or rinsing. Caution: Do not use on wool or silk.

Glycerin-A heavy alcohol that has the ability to mix with some stains without spreading them, it is especially useful in treating some ink stains. Carefully work undiluted glycerin into the stain and then continue treatment as directed. You can find this in your stores such as Wal-Mart or K-Mart in the pharmacy section. Glycerin is also used in making bubbles for your children to play with.

Oil Solvent-Liquid products described as "dry cleaning" solvents contain volatile organic compounds and require careful attention to the manufactures' instructions for safe use. Apply as directed, and allow the area to dry thoroughly before any additional treatment. I have seen some products in the "super-stores" that are now used just for dry cleaning at home. These should work just fine. Once again be sure to follow the manufacturers directions.

First the stain will be listed. Following will be any of the items described above that you may need and then the steps to removal. Let's get started removing those stains:

Baby Formula-Digestant, Detergent, Water, and Oil Solvent. Washables-Moisten the spot with cool water, apply digestant, keep moist. After 15 minutes, rinse with plenty of water. Nonwashables-Sponge with water/detergent mixture, allow to dry, then treat with an oil solvent.

Cheese Sauce-Combination Solvent, Digestant, Oil Solvent. Washables-Apply combination solvent, wash in cool water, apply digestant if needed. Nonwashables-Sponge with warm water, use oil solvent.

Chewing Gum-Peanut Butter, Ice, Hammer, Combination Solvent, Oil Solvent, Cool Water. Soften the bulk with peanut butter, then remove or freeze with ice. Break with hammer. To remove remaining gum: Washables-Rinse with cool water, use combination solvent. Nonwashables-Use combination solvent and cool water, rinse, try oil solvent if needed.

Caution: Do not get peanut butter on any part of the fabric. If you do, see the steps to removing peanut butter below.

Chocolate-Absorbent, Digestent, Oil Solvent. Washables-Apply absorbent, then oil solvent; use digestant for any remaining stain. Nonwashables-Dry Clean the garment.

Cranberry Juice-Water, Glycerin, Combination Solvent. Washables-Sponge off with cool water. Spread fabric over bowl, pour boiling water through fabric from a height of 12 inches. Apply glycerin, rinse, use combination solvent. Bleach to remove any remaining color. Becareful with the bleach. Nonwashables-Sponge with plain water and take to the dry cleaners.

Crayon-Boiling water, vinegar or lemon juice, bleach, warm iron. Washables-Scrape off fabric, spread fabric over bowl, pour boiling water through fabric from a height of 12 inches, use vinegar or lemon juice. Bleach if needed. Nonwashables-Please becareful with this method. Sandwich fabric between paper towels, use warm iron.

Recipes

Quick Fix Chicken Caesar's Salad

1 lb of Boneless/Skinless Chicken Breasts
2 TBSP Oil
1 Head of Romaine Lettuce
1 Package of Good Seasons Cheesey Garlic Dressing or which ever brand you prefer
Bag of Classic Caesar Croutons
Parmesean Cheese Grated or Fresh

Prepare your salad dressing first according to the package and put it in the freezer to chill if you wait until you prepare the meal.
Cut up chicken and cook it in the oil. As your chicken is cooking add your favorite seasonings. Salt, Pepper, Greek Seasoning, Lemon Pepper Seasoning or Cajun Seasoning or you may grill the chicken. This will take longer, but it is tasty. Wash and chop up your lettuce. Place it in a bowl, add your cooked chicken, croutons, parmesean cheese and douse it with your salad dressing. Try having some warm fresh french or Italian bread with it.
