How to Tell Children about the Holy Spirit
1. Who is the Holy Spirit?
When Jesus knew He was going to die, and that He could no longer be with his beloved disciples in Person, then He sent them the Comforter, which is another name for the Holy Spirit (also called the Holy Ghost.)
The Holy Spirit does not have a physical body, like Jesus. But the Holy Spirit is a person only with a spirit body, so you cant see him. And the Holy Spirit is a God, like Jesus and His Father. Jesus cannot be with you physically right now, but the Holy Spirit can. So when you have the Holy Spirit with you, then God is with you!
Jesus is like the sun, and the Holy Spirit is like the warmth and light that comes from the sun. The influence of the Holy Spirit can be felt at any time and in many places.
2. What does the Holy Spirit do?
Jesus often called the Holy Spirit the Comforter. The Holy Spirit will comfort you. He will also guide you to do right things, and will protect you from evil by warning you, when necessary.
The Holy Spirit is like a compass. It is like your conscience. This compass works best when you choose what is right, and try to be a good person. (Epic Heroes, p.44)
3. If I cant see the Holy Spirit, how can I know he is with me?
Think how you feel when you have been kind to someone, or when someone shows you love. Do you feel warm and wonderful? The Holy Spirit is a feeling, like that.
4. How can I know what he is guiding me to do?
The Holy Spirit never shouts or yells. He whispers, like a feeling in your mind. So if it is very noisy all around you, you will not hear him. So pray in a quiet, reverent place, then listen.
The Still Small Voice
Through a still small voice, the Spirit speaks to me
To guide me, to save me from the evil I may see.
If I try to do whats right,
He will lead me through the night,
Direct me, protect me,
And give my soul his light.
Listen to the still small voice!
Listen! Listen! When you have to make a choice.
He will guide you always.
