Description: Heracles was the son of Alcmena, Princess of Thebes, and of Zeus, the king of the gods. It soon became clear that he was no ordinary child, for when he was a baby he strangled two snakes that attacked him in his cradle. As he grew older, Heracles was famous not only in Thebes but throughout all Greece for his bravery and strength.

Hera, queen of the gods, hated Heracles, however, and she sent a madness upon him so that he committed a terrible crime. When he regained his senses, Heracles was horrified at what he had done. As a penance, he had to become the servant of his cowardly cousin King Eurystheus, and was set twelve labors to perform. These were difficult and dangerous, and Heracles needed all his strength and courage.
