_____ Paul Berna

_____ Translated from the French by John Buchanan-Brown, Illustrated by Prudence Seward

_____ Boby Thiriet, with his two older brothers, his sister, and his parents, has lived for almost as long as he can remember in a tiny basement apartment in the overcrowded Paris suburb of Puisay. One foggy winter evening Bobby and his father are discussing their troubles at Fred's Barbershop when a customer, overhearing them, offers the family a luxurious new apartment at the Belloy Estate. Monsieur Thiriet is persuaded to part with his savings in return for the previous tenant's rugs and oak-paneled cupboards -- and the lease -- only to find that he is the victim of a cruel confidence trick. Bobby, his brothers, and their friends follow the trail of a mysterious black cat, find the thieves, and finally recover the money.
