INTERPRETING THE ENVIRONMENT signed
INTERPRETING THE ENVIRONMENT
by Grant W. Sharpe
The principles and methods cited in this textbook have applications to many interests: the college classroom, the public recreation agencies at all levels, and the vast and varied private sector. Interpretive programs are no longer a novelty; the public expects such services and is able to judge the quality of these programs with growing sophistication.
The purpose of this book is to share ideas with the managers, planners, and interpreters of parks, forests, refuges, and equivalent areas, not just in North America, but on all continents.
Part I, The Interpretive Process, gives 6 articles on interpretation. Part II, The Techniques of Interpretation is divided into Personal or Attended Services, with 4 articles, and Nonpersonal or Unattended Services, with 6 articles, such as Signs and Labels, Self Guided Trails, and exhibits. Part III, Supporting Activities, has articles on such subjects as Photography and interpretation, Marine interpretation, historical interpretation, and problems: vandalism and depreciative behavior. Part IV Professional Development addresses education and research. Part V The World Scene, has an article on interpretation around the world.
