What is epilepsy?
A seizure or convulsion occurs when there is an interruption in brain activity. In many cases, seizures are a symptom of epilepsy. Some seizures can actually go undetected, others can cause unconsciousness in the individual. In order to diagnose and treat epilepsy, your physician will order an EEG to determine if there is seizure activity occurring in the brain. This is a pain-free test that simply measures brain waves and activity.
Seizures are caused by a variety of medical issues. In many instances the reason cannot be identified. In approximately twenty-five percent of the cases, a specific or combination of medical causes create a disruption in typical brain waves.
ON A PERSONAL NOTE:
If someone in your family has experienced a grand mal seizure, I understand exactly how you feel. Our youngest son Wade, had seizures. I felt complete despair and sadness whenever he had a seizure.
It is really scary to watch someone you love going through convulsions, jerking motions and loss of consciousness. It seems like it will never end, even though it only lasts one or two minutes. It is very hard to believe that they will be okay after it is over.
After Wade had a seizure, he would be very quite and sleep for several hours, but after he had rested enough, he was his old self again.
We didn't ever know what caused Wade to have seizures. However, he only had seizures when he had a fever, so when he was sick we feed him popsicles to help keep him cool, hoping to prevent him from having another seizure.
The best advise I can give you is to do what we did. Get help from the best doctors you can find. Your family doctor is probably not the most qualified to treat seizures. Neurologist are the doctors who have specialized in these kinds of problems and they are familiar with the newest medications and how to use them safely. You may need to try out more than one neurologist before you find one that provides you with the help you need.
