Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) - What Is it?
PDD stands for Pervasive Developmental Disorders. PDD is actually an umbrella term for a group of disorders. Pervasive Developmental Disorders are characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development:
- reciprocal social interaction skills
- communication skills,
- the presence of stereotyped behavior, interests
and activities.
PDD includes:- Autism
- Rett's Syndrome
- Asperger's Syndrome
- Atypical autism (Mental retardation with autistic features) (atypical childhood psychosis)
- Other childhood disintegrative disorder
These disorders are usually evident in the first years of life and are often associated with some degree of Mental Retardation.
