PDD stands for Pervasive Developmental Disorders. PDD is actually an umbrella term for a group of disorders. Pervasive Developmental Disorders are characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development:

  1. reciprocal social interaction skills
  2. communication skills,
  3. the presence of stereotyped behavior, interests
    and activities.

PDD includes:
  • Autism
  • Rett's Syndrome
  • Asperger's Syndrome
  • Atypical autism (Mental retardation with autistic features) (atypical childhood psychosis)
  • Other childhood disintegrative disorder
These disorders are usually evident in the first years of life and are often associated with some degree of Mental Retardation.
