What is Hornet's Papiermache

The paper nest is carefully taken apart layer by layer and applied to surfaces. The finished product resembles marble but is textured.

I started working with the paper nest that the hornet makes about 5 years ago. The technique has taken some perfecting. It may look as easy as applying an adhesive and then applying the nest paper, but let me assure you there is more to it than that.

I am always asked whatever gave me the idea. I had a large inactive nest hanging on my back porch when a friend's son asked me what I was going to do with it? I told him I didn't know yet and as I said that I reached up and tore off a peice of the paper from the nest and held it up to my eyes.......it was like looking thru a silk scarf. I could see thru it but still see the design of the paper nest and I thought.....I wonder what this would like papiermached onto something?!

That was only the beginning!

I have applied the nest paper to vases, frame mats and frames, bells, candle cups and holders, but when I applied it to a lamp shade and turned it on it nearly took my breath away. That's when I realized these creatures live in a world of lovely translucent light filtering thru the paper nest they construct.

The nests I use are made by the Bald-faced or White-faced Hornet (which is actually a wasp) and the European Hornet (the only true hornet we have in the US).

The nest is carefully taken apart layer by layer.
The nest is then carefully applied to surfaces.
