WHO WE ARE
The LoveSac Story
Just another boring summer day, it was, when Shawn Nelson, 17, turned to his girlfriend and said out of the blue, Let's make a gigantic bean bag. Having only enough cash to afford the scraps off the sale table, Shawn and his girlfriend returned to his house and unrolled the ten yards of tan and black vinyl on his living room floor. The result was a combination of guesswork and raw homemaking skill. After only three weeks of stuffing the seven foot diameter bag with everything from scissor-sliced foam to packing peanuts, to shredded pillows and blankets, the first LoveSac was born.
Shawn, the kid with the big sac, was the most popular man at the drive-in movies as anyone who accompanied him was sure to find a comfortable spot on the gigantic anomaly. He tied it to the roof of his Honda and took it to the park. He filled the bed of his friend's truck with it and took it camping. He took it to the lake, and crashed four people head to toe on it overnight right on the beach. There seemed to be no end to its uses, and the women! Well, the rest of the time the sac just took up space in his bedroom all of it. Shawn was a happy boy indeed.
But all good things come to an end, and in February of 1996 Shawn moved to Taiwan. Needless to say, the sac was just too much to bring along, and so Shawn wrapped it in plastic and crammed it in the shed indefinitely. In the summer of 1998 he was finally reunited with his sac when, back in Utah again, it was drive-in movie-time. Shawn asked Dave Underwood, a new neighbor, to help him get something out of his shed. Once again, the giant sac saw the light of day. Dave stood in awe at its enormity.
It didn't take long before Shawn was hounded with inquiries from friends, relatives, even strangers. Where did you get that giant bean bag? His response, “I made it myself,” deflated their hopes of getting their hands on one, but won their utter respect. Shawn finally saw the vision and on October 31, 1998, established LoveSac Co. Home of the Alternative to Lame Furniture.
Sewing the first prototypes plus Christmas orders in his basement, stuffing them with hand-cut foam, and buying scrap vinyl and upholstery from anywhere he could, the market demand was quickly driving Shawn under. He took on two partners, Christian Janke and James Hyde, and received operating and materials funding from some good friends and family. LoveSac grew like a wiry, but healthy weed, right here in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah. First selling them one by one, and then taking on larger corporate orders, LoveSac has never had a break in production, though constantly improving through research and design.
Since 1996 the standard form of the LoveSac has been through dozens of major and some minor changes, as has the structure of the company. Much credit is due to Shawn's mother, Christian's mother, our faithful seamstresses, and especially all of those friends of LoveSac. Some would even volunteer to see that LoveSac was successful through the crazy Christmas rush. Dave Underwood never did recover from his first sight of the largeness of the original LoveSac and now maintains a management position in the fast-paced, dynamic, corporate world of LoveSac Co.
LoveSac Co. continues to prosper and grow, with plans now to engage in international trade with China. We are expanding into new markets across the western United States. We stand by every product and are proud to be the original creators of the largest frameless furniture in the world, with by far the greatest name, LoveSac.
