Poetry - Lady Clare
Poetry
by Alfred Tennyson
A story told in a masterful way by a master of poetry. Beautifully worded, this poem tells the story of a young girl, brought up as a lady of title, who is told by her mother the day before she is to wed that she is not of true royal blood. Her mother was the nurse maid for the baby girl of the Lord of the castle, and the Lord's baby died unexpectedly. Without telling her master, the nurse took her own baby girl and put her in the place of the child who died. Therefore, all the lands and properties owned by the now Lady Clare, actually belong to the man she plans to marry. Being a girl of character, she decides she must be honest with her betrothed, and tell him the truth about herself. Most men of that day would have taken her inheritance and found a girl of real nobility, but not Lord Ronald. When the truth is revealed to him, he laughs, and reassures her that it is not the blood line or the inheritance which he loves, but she herself whom he loves. This piece is a challenge because of its elevated language, but when properly interpreted is a winner in every way.
