Humorous Interp - The Wonderful Tar Baby Story

Humorous Interp
Humorous Reading
By Joel Chandler Harris

A classic tale by "Uncle Remus", one of his most famous old, southern, Negro stories. This is one of his most famous, about Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox. Tired of being tricked by Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox decides to fix him once and for all. He makes a baby out of tar, and sets it in the middle of the road. He counts on the fact that Brer Rabbit is always too curious for his own good. True to form, Brer Rabbit tries to talk to the Tar Baby, but it doesn't answer him. Finally, Brer Rabbit touches the tar and gets stuck with all four feet. Then Brer Fox comes out, and tries to decide how he's going to kill Brer Rabbit. Every way that Brer Fox says he's going to kill him, Brer Rabbit says, "Go ahead, but whatever you do, please don't throw me in the Brier Patch!" Brer Fox DOES throw him in the brier patch, and much to his dismay, the reading ends with Brer Rabbit saying, "Bred and bawn in a brier-patch, Brer Fox. Bred en bawn en a brier-patch!" And Brer Rabbit out smarts Brer Fox once again.

Two characters. Old-south Negro accent used throughout.
