Patriotic Monologue - I Am A Sick American
Author Unknown
Written during the cold war, this piece is still as relevent today as it was then. This piece, in essence, describes the reaction of the silent majority in America to Krushchev, and other events that threaten our liberty. Today, there is no silent majority; they have been stirred to action, just as this monologue describes. Here is an excerpt from the piece: "I am now 50, and soon my wife and I will see the first of our three children married. I paint my own house, repair my own car, grub my own grass, and nurse a modest savings acount at the Bank of America. I am a law-abiding citizen on the quiet side, and dissention makes me terribly nervous...the other day I ran across the huge old family Bible that I hadn't thought about for years. My great-grandmother had kept a journal of the trip across the Great Palins with a wagon and oxen when she and Great-grandpa were youngsters coming out to settle in California in the great migration." He goes on to describe the hardships faced by our ancestors as they built a great nation. Then his thoughts turn to our enemies, and "what they intend to do to America, to those rich lands and farms, to the cities and the people, to its freedom and its hope. And suddenly I realized that I am a sick American; I am sick of reaction where there should be initiative;" The ending is very powerful, and will stir those who hear it to some kind of action. His closing line, "I am a sick American who intends to get well!" Excellent monologue! Can be read as a letter, or proclaimed as a declemation.
