Dramatic Interp - The Bridges of Toko-Ri
Adapted by Nathan Allen
"In Korea, our nation underwent a new and bewildering experience. It was our first taste of exerceising the reasponsibility thrust upon us by our unsought leadership of the free world." This piece tells the story of Harry Brubaker, a good looking, young, Navy jet pilot; a 29 year old lawyer from Denver, Colorado. He expresses frustration about the war with his commanding officer, and the officer reminds him that, "...all through history free men have had to fight the wrong war in the wrong place. But that's the one they're stuck with. That's why one of these days, we'll knock out those bridges at Toko-ri. I believe tath some morning a bunch of Communist generals ad commisars will be holding a meeting to discuss the future of the war, and a messenger will run in with news that the Americans have knocked out the briedges at Toko-ri. And that one thing will convince the Reds that we'll never stop..never give in..never weaken in our purpose." Soon, Harry Brubaker finds out that he has been chosen to be part of the mission. "But why me?" he asks. "Nobody ever knows why he gets the dirty job. But any society is held together by the eforst of only a few." The reading tells almost play by play action during the mission. Very suspensful! They get the bridges, but Brubaker takes a hit, and goes down in the mountains nearby. As he waits in a rice field for ambush, a helicopter pilot comes to rescue him, but is stuck with Brubaker after his helicopter is shot down. They die fighting, and the piece talks about Brubakers' thoughts before he dies. This is a very stirring piece, with a lot of action, suspense, and honor for those who gave their lives. Excellent! This piece has won several state and national awards. Written for a male.
