Religious Reading - The Betrayal

from the play "But We See Jesus"
by Wendy C. Rivera

The narrator begins by speaking to the audience in first person. He/She tell how they were reading through the Bible the amazing story of Christ. They tell the audience that suddenly, they felt like they were there, watching the betrayal of Christ unfold. Then, the speech turns into dialogue as the High Priest, a Jewish Elder and a Scribe discuss a way to rid themselves of Jesus. Soon, Judas Iscariot enters the room and asks, "How much? How much? What will ye give me to deliver Him unto you?" The High Priest scoffs at the idea at first, but Judas has thought through his plan carefully, and cunningly convinces the Jewish leaders to join him. It ends with a long monologue from Judas -- very intense -- very confrontational. It is a challenge to those who might be acting like a Christian, but truly aren't real believers in their heart. Judas ends with: "But your guilt will always remain -- no matter how far you plunge yourself in the deep, you cannot escape your own mind!!-- or from His eyes. Thirty pieces of silver -- I sold Him to them for the price of a common servant. Condemn me for betraying Him, but you, ... you have sold Him for less!!" It ends with the narrator calling on God in a prayer of repentance. Very powerful and intense piece. Can be performed by a male or female, but better for a male.
