Religious Reading - The Debt Repaid

by C.H. Mead

The narration tells of a happy shepherd, bringing back a lamb who had wandered away during the night. As he turns the bend in the road, he sees a young man, tattered and weary, walking toward him. He strikes up a conversation with him, and insists that the young man sit down for breakfast at his house. "Young man, I never turn away a hungry person from my door, and I never will so long as my name is Robert West."

"Mr. West?" The boy is startled for a moment, and then agrees to the food. After eating, Robert takes the Bible and reads Luke 15 about the prodigal son, and the boy is moved. The boy explains that he is a prodigal, and that his name is Robert West Beatty. He is the son of Fred Beatty, Robert West's roommate who was responsible for leading Robert to the Lord. Fred named his son after his old roommate. So with deep joy, Robert West is able to "repay the debt" by leading his old roommate's son to Christ. An excellent illustration story or short reading for a challenge or devotional.
