Dramatic Interp - Scaramouche
Dramatic Interp
Dramatic Reading
compiled by William Carver
This story is set in 18th century France; a time when a proper duel would suffice to defend a man's honor. But young men often died needlessly over trivial matters because of this socially acceptable violence; the "snare of the world's insanity." Two young cavaliers--best of friends and closer than brothers--seek to uproot the wicked men who are in power. Philippe, the younger of the two, is eloquent and persuasive, and is seen by many in power as a real threat to the government. He is continually trying to convince his friend Andre' to stop his frivilous behavior and take up the cause of liberty and equality. A trap is set to place Philippe in a duel and he is ruthlessly murdered before Andre' can intervene. It takes the death of Philippe to spur Andre' on to action. The suspense continually increases throughout the piece. Difficult because of elevated language. This takes much time and effort to interpret properly. A real winner!!
