Dramatic Monologue - The Fall of the House of Usher

Monologue
by Edgar Allan Poe

The eerie tale of a man who comes to comfort his dying friend, Roderick Usher, who has lived many years with his deranged twin sister, Madeline. During his visit, Madeline dies, and the two friends bury the poor woman. During the next few days, Roderick becomes more and more strange and crazed. One night, during a bad storm, Roderick runs into his guest's room screaming like a mad man. His friend tries to calm him by reading a book, but soon the friend begins to hear the sound that has been driving Roderick to madness. Roderick screams that he fears he has buried his sister alive without knowing it. Suddenly, the door flies open, and Madeline Usher stands in the doorway, barely alive. With her last breath she hurls herself on Roderick, killing him with fright. A very dramatic and suspenseful monologue!
