Dramatic Interp - His Oath
by Alexander Dumas
adapted by Christy C. Stutzman
Set in the time of the French Revolution, a guilt ridden Duchess gives herself over to the authorities as a sympathizer to the crown. However, she is not guilt-ridden because of her political sympathies. She is guilty about her own lack of morality, for many years previous, she had been unfaithful to her husband without his knowlege, and had given birth to their only son; never telling the Duke that his only son was not his own. The Duke has been killed, because of his loyalty to the crown, and the Duchess, despite the pleas of her former lover, and her possession of a document of pardon, gives herself to the court to be killed.
However, the court finds her not-guilty, and sends her to be set free. Before she leaves, she throws herself into the sword of a nearby soldier, asking to be buried next to her husband, as a last testament of her repentance and love for the husband she had wronged.
