Welcome to the Longevity Clinic of La Jolla Website.
The clinic has been specializing in Anti-aging Medicine, one of the fastest growing new specialties in Medicine, since 1995. What makes our medical practice unique is that our goal is producing optimal function rather than simply the absence of illness. Another unique aspect of our practice is that we emphasize the use of Natural Hormones and Nutritional Medicine combined with Traditional Medicine to accomplish that goal.
What are Hormones?
Hormones are vital chemical support systems that are secreted by glands spread throughout the body. This system of glands, including the thyroid, adrenal, pituitary and pineal, is called the endocrine system. The hormones secreted by the endocrine system are powerful sustainers of health and contribute to every process in the body, including cellular repair, metabolism, sexual desire and ability, stress adaptation, immune system function, mental functioning and energy production. The body’s health and vitality are dependent on the activity of vital hormones such as Human Growth Hormone (HGH), Thyroid, DHEA, Testosterone, and Pregnenolone. The ability of each hormone to maintain the body’s health is dependent on the amount of that hormone in the blood stream.
Hormonal Decline a Cause of Aging
After we reach the age of 20, the endocrine system (the system of glands that produce hormones) slowly loses its capacity to maintain hormone production. There appears to be a built in self-destruct mechanism programmed into our genetic timetable; our genetic programming is designed to maintain us optimally through the reproductive years and then slowly, gradually and inexorably cause progressive decay. This decrease in hormone production that starts at the age of 20 is now felt to be one of the prime causes of the aging process.
We are Living Longer, but not as Well as Possible
The consequence of this continuing slowdown becomes apparent decades later. By the time we are 35-40 years old, we start noticeably losing function and vitality due to hormonal deficiencies which started 20 years earlier. As we get older, we continue, in a more obvious fashion, to lose functional abilities. One hundred years ago, at the beginning of the previous century, the average life expectancy was 40 years. Age-related hormone deficiencies were not as much of a problem back then because people died before they occurred. Now that we approaching an average lifespan of 80 years, we are spending the majority of our lives in a sub-optimal state, compromised by a diminished level of hormonal support.
Hormones as a Treatment for Aging
This hormonal-deficiency handicap is now curable. We now have the choice to add quality to the increased quantity of our lifespan. We no longer have to anticipate prolonged golden years, tarnished by the threat of impotence, senility, weakness and dependence.
Natural Hormone Replacement produces a younger bloodstream that overrides the genetic programming of progressive decay that occurs after our peak reproductive years.
Recent scientific breakthroughs in genetic engineering have provided us with the ability for the first time in human history, to keep a youthful level of hormones coursing through our bloodstream. This is accomplished by augmenting our flagging endocrine system with supplemental natural hormones.
Safety of Hormonal Replacement
Natural Hormones are particularly effective because they are “bio-identical” or identical in chemical structure and biological activity to what is naturally being produced by the body. Using bio-identical hormones minimizes the risks of side effects that can occur when a foreign substance is introduced into the body. The body recognizes these supplemental hormones as being identical to what is naturally produced and responds to the youthful level of supportive hormones with improved function. The safety and efficacy of this approach has been published in the medical literature for the past several decades and is also evident in the clinical results obtained by MD specialists in Anti-Aging Medicine.
Benefits of Hormonal Replacement
The benefits of a youthful bloodstream are global. A younger bloodstream enhances immune function, provides more energy, strengthens the heart and lungs, improves body composition, enhances circulation, reduces risk for heart disease and stroke, improves skin appearance and health, deepens sleep, strengthens bones, improves the ability to handle stress, enhances libido and sexual function and promotes a sense of overall well being. We now can change our genetic destiny from progressive senescence to functional vitality, by maintaining an optimal level of hormonal support.
The Birth of Anti-Aging Medicine
Restoring an optimal level of hormonal support to the body is a new paradigm in medicine. When genetic engineering made natural hormones readily available in the 1980s, medical researchers started treating the aging process itself with these hormones. Medical researchers discovered that they were able to restore function and slow decay by restoring youthful hormonal levels in elderly patients. This was the birth of a new field of medicine designed to treat the aging process itself and has since evolved into a unique new specialty, Anti-Aging Medicine.
Hormonal Replacement as Preventative Maintenance
Anti-aging is at its core the ultimate in preventative medicine because it aims to prevent the deterioration and health problems that inevitably occur without intervention. Maintaining optimal levels of hormones to prevent decay and atrophy is similar to doing routine preventative maintenance on your car and replacing worn parts. This maintenance function occurs because certain key hormones (i.e. HGH) facilitate and enable the replacement of dying cells with healthy fully functional new ones. This repair and replacement ability is slowly lost as we age, due to age-related hormonal deficiencies. Without the ability to do ongoing repair and replacement, the body health is eventually compromised by the shrinkage and atrophy that an aging endocrine system causes. The ability to enhance cellular turnover and keep the body supplied with healthy replacement parts gives hormonal replacement therapy such an important role in the maintenance of the physical, mental, sexual, psychological and emotional systems.
A Blood Test will indicate if this Therapy is for You
Fortunately, the scientific developments that have extended the quantity of our years are now able to improve the quality as well. A comprehensive blood test can reveal if age-related hormonal deficiencies are preventing optimal health, contributing to any current health conditions or increasing the risk of future problems. We invite you to explore the opportunity for improved health and vitality that so many of our patients are now enjoying.
