GLA Forte contains borage seed oil, which provides almost five times the amount of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)found in evening primrose oil. An essential fatty acid, GLA is converted in the body to DGLA (dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid) which is the direct precursor of series 1 prostaglandins, which help to modulate an appropriate inflammatory response. GLA also helps to support healthy skin and healthy joint function.

Evening primrose oil, black currant oil, and borage oil are natural sources of another unusual fatty acid called GLA(gammalinolenic acid). Very hard to come by in the diet, GLA is an effective anti-inflammatory agent with none of the side effects of anti-inflammatory drugs. It also promotes healthy growth of skin, hair, and nails. I prescribe it frequently for skin conditions (including brittle nails and hair), arthritis, autoimmune disorders, and premenstrual syndrome. Do not expect immediate results; it takes six to eight weeks to see changes after adding GLA to the diet.

Medical tests with GLA have mostly focused on arthritis. In one double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 37 patients, six months of GLA from borage seed oil relieved sore joints by 36 percent and swollen joints by 28 percent, without side effects. In another study of 56 men and women who used twice as much as the regular dose of GLA, people also reported a decrease in swelling,joint tenderness, stiffness and pain.
