French Dark Chocolate - 8 oz

For those chocolate lover’s we offer our favorite dark chocolates, which are high in heart protective flavanoids and low in sugar. They contain a minimum of 70 % Chocolate -- or more specifically, the plant phytochemicals called flavanoids that are found in abundance in cocoa -- may have two positive effects in humans. The new data shows it might act as an antioxidant, blocking arterial damage caused by free radicals. These unstable molecules are produced by normal cell processes, and may cause heart disease by damaging the lining of arteries that feed blood to the heart. In addition, chocolate appears to inhibit platelet aggregation, a factor in heart attacks and strokes.

Chocolate May Benefit The Physical Heart, Too

WASHINGTON, Feb. 21 (Reuters Health) -- On Valentine's Day, many hearts were gladdened by a box of candy from a loved one. They may be gladdened again by study results presented Friday by several researchers who said they have test tube and human data showing that some kinds of chocolate may help protect against heart disease.

The research was almost entirely funded by candy maker Mars Inc. Harold Schmitz, a company researcher who has also conducted studies of the potential benefits of chocolate, said that the company would likely seek a health claim for chocolate from the Food and Drug Administration in two to five years.

Chocolate -- or more specifically, the plant phytochemicals called flavonoids that are found in abundance in cocoa -- may have two positive effects in humans.

The protective effects are strongest in chocolate bars or drinks that have high concentrations of cocoa powder. Dark chocolate, for instance would have more of an effect than milk chocolate. White chocolate has none of the cocoa flavonoids.

In a study of healthy men and women, those given a beverage made from 1 tablespoon of a flavonoid-rich cocoa powder and water took longer to form blood clots. It appears that the cocoa slowed down the clotting action of platelets, said lead study author Dr. Carl Keen of the University of California, Davis.

He said the effect was similar to that seen in people who took daily doses of aspirin to ward off heart attacks.

But, said Keen, he was not suggesting that people stop taking aspirin. "The effects we are seeing are not as robust as those seen with aspirin."

His study was small -- encompassing only about 40 patients total, which suggests the need for more study.

In several other studies -- all done in the test tube -- researchers found that cocoa flavonoids caused a chemical reaction that would lead to relaxation of the blood vessels in the human body. And, they seemed to inhibit formation of cyclo-oxygenase, an enzyme that plays an important role in causing inflammation.

Given this data, it is thought that the flavonoids could have some beneficial effect in stroke and heart disease said Schmitz and several other researchers.
