banner- a graphic or image used for advertising on a web page (top of page)
browser- a software program, which interprets html, enabling the user to view internet files; this is the program you are using to surf the internet, e.g. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator. (top of page)
client- a software program used to retrieve data from a server program on another computer top of page)
cookie- information sent from a web server to a browser that is saved (usually on the visitor's computer), so that it can be sent back to the server when requested at a later date; this information is usually such things as login information, or user preferences (top of page)
domain name- the name of a web site(e.g. thecandystore.com); the part after the dot designates the type of site, e.g. .com (commerce/business), .gov (government), .edu (education), .net (network) (top of page)
e-mail- an electronic message sent via computer (top of page)
ftping- (fteepeeing/file transfer protocol) transfer of files between internet sites or computers; it is a method used to upload a web site to the internet (top of page)
gif- (graphic interchange format) a type of image file, usually consisting of simple images and a limited number of colors (top of page)
hit- commonly thought of as a measure of the number of times a web site is accessed or visited; however, a hit is actually the number of times the browser receives a request from the server for a single item, so if a web page contains 3 images, the number of hits would be counted as 4 (top of page)
host- a computer on a network that is used to service other computers; it is the computer on the internet where a web site resides (top of page)
html- (hypertext markup language) the set of instructions the browser uses to determine how to display the information on a web page (top of page)
hyperlink- a graphic or text that you click on that transports you from one location to another on a web site, or from one web site to another (top of page) impression- the number of times a banner is displayed within a 24 hour period (top of page)
ISP- (Internet Service Provider) the service that connects you to the internet, e.g. AOL (top of page)
jpeg-(joint photographics experts group) a type of image file used for photographs or more complex images with many colors (top of page)
keywords- the words entered in a search inquiry that a search engine uses to locate the information requested, usually these keywords are referenced in a web site's (top of page)
LAN- (local area network) a computer network limited to an immediate area, usually the same building or floor (top of page)
marquee- a message displayed within a web site with information relating to that site, usually seen as a scroll at the top of a page (top of page)
meta tags- the html tags used to identify the creator of a web page, the keywords for that page, which are used by search engines to respond to search inquiries, and the description of the web site (this description is usually displayed across the top bar of your browser when you view a web page (top of page)
network- a connection between 2 or more computers that allows them to share the same resources (top of page)
search engine- a tool on the internet used to locate web sites or information related to a specific topic; using the keywords entered into your search inquiry, a search engine locates and display a list of the web pages or sites that satisfy the criteria (top of page)
server- software that provides files or data in reponse to requests from a client computer (top of page)
spamming- sending out the same unsolicited message to a large number of people (top of page)
spider or web crawler- the software program used by a search engine that goes out to each web site and catalogues the the text on the pages; this information is then kept in a database and used to respond to search engine inquiries (top of page)
url- (uniform resource locator) a web page's internet address; every web page has a unique address, e.g. http://www.nbiz.com/lyddonenterprises; "http" is the protocol (rules used to access the document on the internet), and the information following the "www" designates the name of the server and the path to the web page (top of page)
web site- a group of web pages relating to a particular individual or company that can be viewed over the internet (top of page)
