For over 70 years, Standard Process has provided health care professionals with high-quality, nutritional whole food supplements. Their extensive collection of products supports the healthy functioning of endocrine, cardiovascular, digestive, hepatic, respiratory, skeletal, renal, and other physiological systems. Every year, they develop innovative whole food nutritional products to further address patient needs. In the beginning of 2001, they partnered with MediHerb® to provide health care professionals with superior herbal products. In 2002, they added Standard Process Veterinary Formulas™ to their expanding list of quality nutritional products. These products are specifically designed to provide optimal nutritional support for dogs and cats. Dr. Royal Lee, founder of Standard Process, developed a pioneering philosophy that has stood the test of time – the best natural source of vitamins and minerals come from whole food nutrients, and good health comes from good nutrition. In addition, Standard Process was built on a unique belief that the quality of a whole food supplement is dependent on the quality of the manufacturing process. These beliefs are at the center of everything that is done at Standard Process and these beliefs are the reason they continue to offer the best in nutrition and healthy living, year after year. The Key is High-Quality Ingredients The vitamins, minerals, and Protomorphogen™ and Cytosol™ brand extracts in the Standard Process products support specific organs and organ systems by providing many essential nutritional compounds, including amino acid complexes, digestive enzymes, and essential fatty acids. Each formula is made up of a unique combination of whole vitamin complexes, chelated minerals, Protomorphogen™ brand extracts, Cytosol™ brand extracts, and botanical ingredients. Individual ingredients are selected for their specific metabolic and support effects. …The Whole Food Philosophy – The best sources of vitamins and minerals are found in whole foods. Standard Process has been a leader in the field of nutritional supplements since 1929. The company is committed to the whole food philosophy mentioned above – good health comes from good nutrition and the best sources of vitamins and minerals are found in whole foods. All Standard Process products are built upon this holistic paradigm. Standard Process combines whole, enzymatically active foods (botanicals, phytonutrients, whole plant, and organ/gland extracts and concentrates) with essential whole vitamin complexes and chelated minerals to provide optimal health for you. Nutritional scientists are continually discovering what Standard Process has taught and practiced since 1929. Micronutrients, both known and unknown, found only in whole foods are more essential to health than isolated vitamins and minerals taken away from their complete food matrix. Whole vitamin complexes are derived from concentrates of plants like pea vine, beet leaf, rice bran, and alfalfa. To preserve the nutrients within the whole food, Standard Process uses a unique process to manufacture their products. …Protomorphogen™ Brand Extracts Continuing the pioneering work of Dr Royal Lee, certain Standard Process products contain specific Protomorphogen™ brand extracts. Protomorphogen™ brand extracts provide an important adjunct for nutritional support of cellular function. In the 1940's, Dr. Royal Lee pioneered a unique method of deriving extracts known as cell determinants from specific organs and glands for clinical use. He described in detail what these extracts contained and how they functioned in cell regulation, maintenance, and interaction with tissue antibodies. It is believed that Protomorphogen™ brand extracts contain largely nuclear fractions derived from the whole gland or organ. A goal of the Research & Development Department at Standard Process is to gain a greater understanding of the cell determinants in Protomorphogen™ extracts as described by Dr. Royal Lee. Efforts are underway to elucidate their biochemical action within the whole organism and their contribution to the whole health of cells, organs, and body systems. It is important to note the Protomorphogen™ extracts differ in manufacture and application from what are commonly referred to as glandulars. Because these extracts have distinct clinical applications and effects, they should not be confused with glandulars, nor should they be referred to simply as protomorphogens. Protomorphogen™ is the trademark owned and used by Standard Process Inc. as a brand name assigned to these uniquely derived extracts. PMG™ is another trademark owned and used by Standard Process Inc as another brand name for these extracts, which is used when referring to a specific organ or gland. …Cytosol™ Brand Extracts Cytosol™ brand extracts are derived from the cytoplasm of selected organs and glands. These extracts contain cytoplasmic factors such as enzymes, hormone precursors, and synergistic cofactors that are the biochemical building blocks essential to cellular metabolism in their respective tissues. Thus, cytosolic components offer significant clinical benefits, and they are complementary to Protomorphogen™ extracts in the support of organs and glands. Cytosol™ is the trademark owned and used by Standard Process Inc. as the brand name of these uniquely derived cytosolic extracts and should be not mistaken for or used in place of glandulars. …Botanicals Botanicals provide important factors that contribute a third tier of organ and glandular support by complementing the whole vitamin complexes, minerals, enzymes, and tissue concentrates. For example, silymarin found is Silybum marianum provides hepatic protection and support. In addition to having botanical ingredients in some of the Standard Process products, they also offer an entire line of quality herbal supplements. Through their exclusive partnership with MediHerb®, an Australian herbal company, they are able to offer the finest herbal supplements. MediHerb products are passed through an outstanding quality control program and a unique manufacturing process using1:2 Cold Percolation. Through the unique combination of whole food concentrates, Protomorphogen™ and Cytosol™ extracts, and botanicals, every Standard Process product is designed to provide specific nutritional support. In order to product high-quality supplements, Standard Process products undergo a unique process involving foods grown on company-owned, organic farmland, a state-of-the-art manufacturing process, and continuous quality control testing. …Farming at Standard Process – "whole food nutrition begins with sun, water, and fertile soul." – Dr Royal Lee. Hundreds of thousands of years ago, retreating glaciers deposited rich, black soil, laden with minerals and nutrients in the Kettle Moraine basin in Wisconsin. It is here, on over 1,000 acres of farmland, that Standard Process grows many of the raw materials used in their whole food supplements. Nature has done most of the work for them, and they use organic farming practices to ensure that the quality of the earth is maintained for years to come. Each year, crop rotations on the Standard Process farmland are planned based on annual soil tests taken to monitor fertility and micronutrient levels on each plot. …Organic Farming Methods Dr. Royal Lee, founder of Standard Process, emphasized the importance of producing high quality, nutritionally pure whole food supplements. Standard Process is proud to be one of the few whole food supplement manufacturers that can assure quality ingredients and continue this tradition by growing many of their raw materials locally and organically. Standard Process is proud to own and operate an organically certified farm. They organically grow the following cops regularly: alfalfa, beets, Spanish Black Radish, Brussels sprouts, buckwheat, carrots, garlic kidney beans, pea vine, and oats. In accordance with their certification, Standard Process follows strict organic guidelines to grow and process their crops, and they also keep detailed records of their farming practices. Standard Process farmland and processing facility are monitored annually to ensure that only the highest quality farming practices are taking place. …Seeds They start each season by planting only organic seeds. Most seed is planted directly in the field, but some plants get their start in the greenhouse located at their facility before being transplanted in the field. …Irrigation Irrigation is supplied from an artesian well tapping into glacial waters over five hundred feet below the farm's surface. …Weed Control Organic weed control standards are strictly adhered to at the Standard Process Farm. The main methods of weed management include: Cultivating, Mowing, Hand weeding, Cover crops – used for weed prevention and as a source of nitrogen. In addition, they utilize a crop flamer, a tool employed by the organic community to control weeds that come up between the crop rows before vegetables have a chance to canopy. New technology will allow us to continually improve our efforts at weed management. …Eco-sensitive Manufacturing The majority of biodegradable by-products, the materials remaining after the main extraction process of our nutritional supplements, are returned to the fields in a monitored, land-spreading program. By doing this, they keep nearly one million pounds of by-products out of landfills every year and put natural nutrition back into the soil to be utilized by crops the following year. …Isolated Farmland Since the Standard Process farm is surrounded on all sides by organic buffers, their crops are isolated from other non-organic agricultural land and chemical inputs from traditional farming practices. This has been key to their organic status and success. Dr. Royal Lee, founder of Standard Process, said, "Whole foods are the best natural source of vitamins. The key to the highest quality is the manufacturing process." At Standard Process, they are involved from the moment the seed is planted through shipping the finished product to your door. Because preserving the whole food complex is a top priority when manufacturing their supplements, Standard Process carefully follows time proven formulas based on Dr. Lee's philosophies to manufacture their whole food supplements. …Exclusive Manufacturing Processes In order to produce the highest quality whole food supplements, Standard Process products undergo one of three unique manufacturing processes. Each process is custom engineered to preserve the nutrients of the food. Process 1 – Low-temperature, High-Vacuum Dryers Whole foods grown on their organically certified farmland, such as Brussels sprouts and carrots, are harvested and then carefully ground. These raw foods are slowly dried in their exclusive low-temperature, high-vacuum dryers to preserve the nutrients in them. Process 2 – Juice Extraction To capture the nutrients from raw materials such as buckwheat, alfalfa, and peas, the juice is pressed from these plants and separated from the pulp. Since conventional water-separating methods can rob the food of valuable fat-soluble nutrients, Standard Process has designed a separating process to extract all the liquids, not just the water fraction. The result is a concentrated product laden with both fat- and water-soluble nutrients. The "juice" is then dried in their low-temperature, high-vacuum dryers. Process 3 – Separation Process Selected specific animal tissues used to make their Protomorphogen™ and Cytosol™ extracts are ground to create a liquid slurry. The slurry is subjected to their exclusive multistep separation methods to obtain the nuclear/membrane and cytosolic fractions, respectively. To preserve the nutrients in the final products, each fraction is then dried in their low-temperature, high-vacuum dryers. Animal tissues are obtained exclusively from USDA certified facilities. Continuing the Process…Mixing, Binding, and Packaging Mixing Dried materials are measured and mixed with utmost precision. Because of the variability in sources of natural and organic ingredients, color and odor may vary from batch to batch. However, the basic formula remains constant and quality is ensured by repeat testing. Binding Only natural binding ingredients, such as honey and gum arabic, are used in their tablet manufacturing process. Cellulose is often used to give body to the powders. Calcium stearate, derived from vegetable sources, is used as a lubricant in their tablet machines. No artificial flavoring is ever used. Packaging The final product is sealed in amber or green glass bottles. The color of the glass helps protect the food's nutrients from damaging light, while the sealed bottle helps prevent product oxidization. Induction lids and bottleneck seals protect against product tampering. The bottled product is then labeled and packaged in cardboard boxes for easy storage, protection, and shipping. Tablets, Capsules, and Powders Standard Process whole food supplements are offered in several forms of delivery. The three most common are tablets, capsules, and powders. Tablets One of the tablet processes used by Standard Process is the Nova Press, which can produce up to 300,000 tablets per hour. This press is computer monitored and measures the weight, density, and thickness of the tablets. This allows for high volume production without sacrificing quality control in the manufacturing process. Currently, their tableting department yields close to 90 products. All of their finished tablets are routinely analyzed for content to ensure that label claims are accurate. Capsules High-tech computers monitor their capsuling machines to ensure that precise amounts of product are measured and enclosed in their natural gelatin capsules. One of the capsule machines used by Standard Process is the Matic 90, which can product 85,000 capsules per hour. This machine has an internal computer system that is programmed for the specifications of each product, and it ejects defective capsules. The capsuling department currently produces nearly 50 products through the use of 4 capsule machines. Powders Standard Process uses a Spee-Dee 2000L computer-controlled digitronic auger filler to fill our powder formulas. This system achieves very accurate fills and provides a highly consistent product from batch to batch. At the 150,000 square foot Standard Process facility in Palmyra, Wisconsin, quality is an integral part of every step in the manufacturing process. Their whole food supplements meet and exceed the most demanding quality standards. This is because they handle and control their manufacturing processes; milling, mixing, tableting, bottling, and packaging, many of which are exclusive to Standard Process Throughout the farming and manufacturing processes, trained scientists at the Standard Process full-scale Microbiology and Chemistry laboratories continually test products using state-of-the-art equipment. Standard Process quality control methods ensure that the foods that eventually become Standard Process supplements are rich in nutrients and synergistic micronutrients and free of contamination. Testing Stage One At the Standard Process local farm, before anything is grown or processed, they test the mineral and nutrient levels in the soil. The Standard Process quality standards demand that the soil be rich in minerals and humus. No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are ever used in their organic growing process. Testing Stage Two Before the manufacturing process being, scientists in the Standard Process Microbiology laboratory sample and test each and every raw material that will be used in their whole food supplements. Tests are performed after each stage of production throughout the process to ensure the product is safe from bacteriological contamination. Every week, as many as 400 samples of raw materials, product batches, and finished products are tested by their scientists. Testing Stage Three Standard Process chemists perform assays on all raw materials and product batches to determine the vitamin and mineral content. These assays guarantee that the label claims are accurate and that maximum nutrition is being delivered. Testing Stage Four Physical tests on the products are also performed after the tableting and bottling process. Tablets are monitored for hardness, size, weight, moisture, and water activity. Hardness and moisture testing ensures that tablets remain intact throughout the packaging and shipping process. Disintegration tests are run on tablets to make sure they dissolve within the USP time specification. This ensures that you will be able to digest and absorb the nutrients quickly and easily. Powders and capsules are monitored for moisture and consistency. Weight testing guarantees that label claims are being met. Standard Process uses testing procedures approved by the Association of Analytical Chemists (AOAC). Normally, a product is tested between six and eight times throughout the manufacturing process. Testing after each stage of production enables Standard Process to maintain critical processing control points to ensure quality and safety. Standard Process takes great pride in its quality assurance program. The Standard Process team of trained microbiologists and chemists work hard to guarantee customers receive the best quality product on the market today. Research & Development Dr. Royal Lee believed in the value of scientifically researched, whole food nutritional supplements. This required more than his usual extensive review of the current medical literature of his time, it required clinical research. He field tested his unique nutritional supplements and endorsed and supported clinical evaluations of them by others. Input from health care professionals enabled him to enhance and perfect the health benefits of Standard Process products. Standard Process is dedicated to continuing Dr. Lee's vision of high-quality, whole food nutritional supplements that are based on sound scientific research and clinical application and evaluation. This is why Standard Process combines evaluation of current scientific research and Dr. Lee's insights and teaching with applied clinical research in the Research and Development department. The Standard Process Research and Development department consists of skilled, professionally trained, degreed scientists. Their goal is to gain a detailed understanding of the underlying biochemical components, physiological activities, and health applications of whole food nutritional products. For example, the department is currently working to determine the antioxidant capacity of their supplements and developing a comparison of antioxidants in a whole base, versus a synthetic isolate. In addition, they are characterizing and analyzing the biological constituent of the Protomorphogen™ and Cytosol™ extracts, with emphasis on elucidating bioactive components. In addition to the above, the Standard Process Research and Development department is conducting studies on plans for new product development, including: …Analysis of the active components of plants. …Determination of the stages in the plant life cycle that produce the highest yields of the nutrients of interest. …Observing how &ifferent stages of manufacturing and storage affect nutrient yields. …Assaying nutrients within the whole &ood matrix for biological activity, such as antioxidant capacity. Standard Process works to provide health care professionals with a solid scientific basis for the safe and effective use of high-quality whole foods, herbs, and other natural products so that you can be assured that you are receiving nothing but the best. |
