DBfields is a Word Pro script that makes it easy to use data from dBaseIV .dbf files in Word Pro documents. Script run from a function key creates a set of custom DocInfo fields that display data from a record. The user selects a keyword from a dialog list, and the scripts insert or update the fields. If no custom fields are present, a set is inserted inside a frame or a bookmark. If fields are present, they are updated with values from the chosen record.

The values can be changed at any time by using a new keyword. Data can also be inserted as plain text via a keyboard shortcut. The custom fields can be inserted in a SmartMaster, formatted, and saved for reuse. Mailing labels are supported, as is automatic envelope addressing and bar coding.

Do I Need to Know LotusScript to use this product?
No, but with minimal editing you can "pre-format" the fields to suit your data. You can combine fields, add labels, and change number and date formats by pasting simple code examples included with the scripts. The DBfields User Manual covers customization in depth.

Who Should Use DBfields?
Any Word Pro user who generates letters or other documents that need data from an external file that can be put into .dbf format.

Although designed to handle mailing addresses, the scripts are not limited to that use. Up to fifteen fields can be inserted in any order, and formatted with different line breaks, spacing, text prefixes, etc. The optional inserted frame can be set to any size or style.

Among other uses, DBfields is an alternative to the rather primitive form letter feature in Lotus Approach. By using data from Approach in Word Pro letters, you have full access to Word Pro's powerful word processing features.
