He spent eight years in the French Special Forces as a War Dog supervisor, trainer and handler. Cedrik logged active duty as a Military Dog Handler in the Balkans, Middle East, South America, and Africa. His vast experience as a Military Work Dog, Police K-9 Trainer & Working Dog Decoy is now available at Von Asgard K-9 Center. In Europe, Cedrik also has proven credentials as a competitor, trainer & decoy in the most demanding of the K-9 Euro-Sports: KNPV (PH-1 & PH-2) and Belgian/French/Mondio Ring. Trained police dogs demonstrate their talents

SARASOTA - It was dog versus decoy Wednesday in Sarasota. The Newstalk 1220 morning radio crew decided to test their strength and see what kind of bite some Suncoast police and rescue canines could muster.

Comedian Al Ernst is suiting up for Gus, the hundred-pound German Shepard trained to attack criminals. "This is the greatest moment of my career." Ernst, also known as the E-man, is a co-host on Newstalk 1220's "The Morning After Show," the crew who organized the event. "I think it is important that people see that these dogs do some really cool things. We get the entertainment part of it, but we also get the education part of it as well."

After a friendly hello, the E-man gets his chance to see what he and Gus are made of.

Co-host and dog trainer Christie Fletcher knows exactly what he's feeling. "I myself have taken four bites from Gus. I have the scar there to prove it. He bit right through the sleeve on me and it does hurt. It's an adrenaline rush and I just wanted these guys to experience it."

The radio team also invited Cedrik Merlet with Von Asgard K-9 Center to help with the demonstrations. Fletcher says he's known as one of the most reputable decoys in the U.S. Even after firing of six rounds of ammunition, Gus takes Cedrik down, not intimidated by the gunfire.

Merlet spent 8 years in the French special forces as a war dog supervisor, trainer and handler. "When you take a little puppy and you develop for a year or so...to see a dog finish, it's an accomplishment of your job. So I love it."

He says Gus and Nixie are two of the most well trained protection, search and rescue and cadaver dogs in the southeast. Their handler is Mike Hadsell, who lets Gus get a mouthful of radio co-host Jake Jacobson. Fletcher says the demonstration is meant to highlight the non-profit Service Dog Rescue (located at Von Asgard K-9 Center) where they rescue dogs that are difficult to adopt out then train them to be like Gus.
